Upcoming Events and Seminars

IIFA BREXIT Seminar - Tuesday 21st February 2017

L to R, Fionn Uibh Eachach, Director VAT - KPMG Ireland, Frankie Devlin, Partner - KPMG Northern Ireland, Tom Thornton, IIFA President, Deirdre Clune - MEP Ireland/ Member of the Transport Committee - European Parliament and Guest Moderator Anton Savage. Not pictured, John McGrane, Director General, British Irish Chamber

As Ireland's largest Representative Body for the Irish Freight Transport and Logistics industry, the Council of IIFA are taking a proactive approach to preparing Members of the future. IIFA Members will be directly impacted by the consequences of BREXIT through their work in facilitating the International Carriage of goods and Customs Clearance services. On Tuesday 21st February 2017, IIFA organised a seminar for its Members with the following Speakers:

Tom Thornton - President of IIFA

Slides from the IIFA presentation are available here

Deirdre Clune - MEP Ireland/ Member of the Transport Committee - European Parliament

John McGrane - Director General, British-Irish Chamber of Commerce

Frankie Devlin, Partner, & Fionn Uibh Eachach, Director VAT - KPMG Ireland

Slides from the KPMG presentation are available here

The final hour of this seminar took a workshop approach through which the assembled Business Leaders were asked to collectively address 6 key questions. The first of these questions took the form of a SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats) and then looked forward to appropriate responses to the anticipated effects of BREXIT from Government perspectives and questioning any areas which may be absent from popular/ mainstream BREXIT dialogue within Ireland.

The results of this workshop are available here

While a great amount of uncertainty still surrounds BREXIT, the above Speakers were carefully selected for their unique perspectives. Topics covered included am insight into continental Europe's reactions to and feelings toward BREXIT, reports on developments since June 2016 and an in-sight into potential tax implications arising from potential BREXIT scenarios, based on existing Trade Agreements within the European Union. This event was also an opportunity Members to voice their concerns with their industry Colleagues. BREXIT will have an enormous impact on the Irish Freight Forwarding industry and Members will need to have an understanding of how it will affect our industry in order to prepare for same.

IIFA Symposium - Container Weight Verification + Electronic Box matching
Captain Black, Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport with IIFA President Tom Thornton Captain Black, Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport, IIFA President Tom Thornton and Deirdre Greene, Department of Revenue

From 1st July 2016, Ship Captains must be presented with verified weights in advance of a container arriving at a Port. In cases, responsibility for declaring the correct weight will lie with the Exporter however in the event of consolidated shipments, responsibility will lie with Freight Forwarders/ Consolidators. This is an important issue and one that will broadly effect the wider freight, transport and distribution industry. IIFA members were briefed of these changes through FIATA's Container Weight Verification toolkit in September 2015 and on 25th February 2016, Declan Black of the Department Transport, Tourism & Sport addressed IIFA members and relevant related industry bodies on what to expect when the changes come into effect on 1st July 2016.

Deirdre Greene of Revenue also gave a presentation on the rate of successful box matching on SAD documents, which presently can be as low as 13%. Revenue are seeking to implement full matching of SAD entries from 1st April 2016 and used this opportunity to speak with assembled members of IIFA regarding these plans.

Below are links to important documentation relating to the changes to be introduced later this year. This page will be updated as more information is made available throughout the year.
