Paddy Kenny, William Cress and Tom Thornton
FIATA host spring meetings each March at their headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland. These meetings are attended by FIATA National Association representatives. A delegation from Ireland attended this event to participate in the different sessions and also to promote the FIATA World Congress to the assembled 239 participants from 51 countries. Seamus Kavanagh made two presentations during the weekend event. The first and most important was to the full assembled audience and focused on the highlights of Dublin City as an attraction for the Congress. He also encouraged all regular FIATA World Congress attendees to consider inviting a new colleague to join them in Dublin later this year, so that more Forwarders can experience what a FIATA World Congress is really about.
The present Secretary General of FIATA, Mr. Robert Voltman, is the CEO of the Transport Intermediaries Association of America. In order to promote FIATA's interests in his home country, Mr. Voltman invited IIFA President Mr. Tom Thornton and IIFA Executive Officer Seamus Kavanagh to attend the TIA Capital Ideas Conference and Exhibition, held in San Antonio, Texas between 6th - 9th April 2016. IIFA showcased the FIATA World Congress in Dublin through networking at various sessions but primarily as part of the Exhibition Area of the TIA Conference. With over 1200 representatives from North America, Canada and Mexico in attendance, the team worked hard to make their mark on the event. Many Delegates could be seen adding promotional Irish shamrocks to their suits and Congress lanyards and significant interest was expressed in forming a TIA delegation to attend the FIATA World Congress in Dublin. Seamus Kavanagh also made sure to make Ireland a talking point by winning TIA's charity 5k road race.

In a room of over 70 attendees, IIFA presented an overview of the event to assembled Exporters and Supply Chain representatives. In addition to the key speakers lined up for the Congress, including Secretary General of the World Customs Organisation Mr. Kunio Mikuriya and local Speaker, Josephine Feehily of the Policing Authority of Ireland, IIFA highlighted on the various networking opportunities that will be available at this globally attended Congress.
Over the next few weeks, IIFA's International Partners will make presentations on the 2016 FIATA World Congress on IIFA's behalf, at events all around the World. FIATA subdivides the globe into 4x regions, with each hosting a field meeting in May/ June 2016. The Dublin Congress will be highlighted to international audiences at:

Region Americas (tbc) in Barcelona, Spain as part of the 33rd Congress of the Federation of National Associations of Freight Forwarders and International Logistics Operators in Latin America and the Caribbean (ALACAT) 7th - 9th June 2016
The FIATA World Congress is a truly global event, bringing together representatives from all continents. Delegates attend these events each year in order to learn new skills from the World's best Speakers, to update themselves on important issues effecting the industry, and to expand their business networks and opportunities by establishing connections with a global audience of like-minded individuals. This is a truly unique opportunity for Ireland. I rish Port sector returns to Growth
2015 heralded a return to growth and throughput for the Irish Port sector. Many of the national port companies reported an increase in traffic volumes over the past 12 months with some ports reporting record breaking figures. The 2015 results will contribute to strengthening the case for many of the planned national ports development initiatives.
Shannon Foynes Port Company estimated that the port handled trade worth €6 billion last year bring it close to hitting a decade-old record. The port company said it handled more than 11.1 million tonnes, up from 10.1 million in 2014. Its performance last year came close to the peak of 11.35 million tonnes reached in 2006.
The Port of Waterford Company reported increases across all categories shipped through the port. There was a 10% increase in tonnage of bulk cargoes in 2015 compared to 2014. The number of containers handled was up by 3% on the previous year while total throughput at the port grew by 8% to 1.58m tonnes. In all, 415 cargo vessels arrived at the port in 2015, up 3.75% on 2014. The port welcomed 16 cruise ships during 2015, providing a further positive economic spin-off for Waterford and the wider southeast region.Commenting on the 2015 figures, Frank Ronan CEO at the Port of Waterford Company said: "Reflecting the improving macroeconomic situation, we are satisfied with the results achieved last year while obviously now focused on 2016 and beyond. The port is well positioned to benefit from the Irish economic recovery which continues to gather momentum and the team here are committed to identifying and leveraging every possible inbound and outbound trading opportunity."
Dublin Port Company experienced a "record" year in 2015, with cargo volumes up by 6.4 % putting the port ahead of its previous peak in 2007. On release of the figures to the media, Eamonn O'Reilly, Chief Executive of Dublin Port Company, said: "2015 was an exceptional year for Dublin Port. We have seen growth over the past three years of 17.3% and are now well ahead of where we were at the height of the boom in 2007." In 2015, total throughput for the port was 32.8 million gross tonnes with 7,166 ship arrivals in the year, exceeding the port's previous record levels of 2007. The port also reported strong growth on the tourism side with 1.8 million ferry passengers travelling through the port in 2015, up by 5.1% on 2014, while it was also a strong year for the port's cruise business. There was balanced growth between imports and exports, Dublin Port said, with imports up 6.5% at 19.5 million gross tonnes, on the back of strengthening of domestic demand. Exports were ahead at 13.3 million gross tonnes in 2015.
The Port of Cork also reported 11 million tonnes of trade traffic passing throught the port facilities in Cork, Tivoli, Ringaskiddy and Bantry Bay in 2015. Total Trade traffic reached 9.8 million tonnes up a significant 10% on 2014 traffic figures. Bantry Bay Port Company dropped slightly from 1.3 million tonnes in 2014 to 1.1 million tonnes in 2015. Total container volumes through both Tivoli and Ringaskiddy Terminals grew by 8% compared to 2014 figures with over 205,000 TEU's handled. Dry bulk cargos such as animal feed, increased by 2% in 2015 while fertilisers and cereals both decreased slightly. Liquid bulk cargo, predominantly the oil traffic through Whitegate Oil Refinery continues to have a significant impact on the overall traffic through the Port of Cork with oil traffic in 2015 showing an increase of almost 20%. The 2015 result is attributed by Port of Cork management to an increase in demand from the domestic market as recovery takes hold and due to a maintenance shut-down in the Whitegate refinery the previous year.
Commenting on the 2015 trade traffic results, Port of Cork Chairman Mr. John Mullins said: 'We are pleased with the total trade traffic figures across both Bantry and Cork in 2015. Achieving traffic figures which are in line with pre-recessionary time highlights the beginning of the positivity returning to the market. I am confident that we can sustain this growth across 2016. Container traffic increased by 8% indicating the confidence in the consumer market for imports and the growth of exports in the agricultural and pharmaceutical sectors. The Port's move to Ringaskiddy is vitally important to meet expected further growth in this market.'

FIATA Presidency bestows honour of "FIATA Fellow" to Geoffrey Arend
L to R: Immediate FIATA Past President Francisco Parisi, Babar Badat, Issa Baluch, Geoffrey Arend,
FIATA President Zhao Huxiang and Jean-Claude Delen
In the year when FIATA's history becomes 90 year old, the "FIATA Fellow" honour was bestowed upon Mr. Geoffrey Arend, the distinguished journalist who publishes the air business specialised publication "Flying Typers". Delivering the award at the 2016 FIATA HQ Session in Zurich last month, was none other than Mr. Huxiang Zhao, President of FIATA and CEO of the 80,000-employee SINOTRANS & CSC Holdings Co, Ltd. of Beijing, China; "The FIATA Presidency expresses appreciation for your outstanding contributions to the freight forwarding and logistics industry. We honour Geoffrey for over 40 years of work highlighting the air forwarder story in a manner that has been significantly beneficial to enhance the knowledge and reputation of FIATA Members"
Mr. Arend accepted the designation as "FIATA Fellow", telling industry leaders "Without the freight forwarder, there is no air cargo business. For FIATA to honour someone like me, who has been charged by the airlines to tell their story to the forwarders, is a completely humbling experience."
With this award FIATA recognises Mr Arend for his longstanding successful dedication and hard work. He has served the air cargo industry for a stunning 45 years remaining an ardent and unwavering advocate for a better, more thoughtful air cargo industry through his publication (Flying Typers). The Members of the FIATA Presidency adopted the habit of congratulating eminent personalities who have been significantly beneficial for FIATA and its members with the title of "FIATA Fellow". The object of this title is to enable FIATA to express appreciation for outstanding contributions to the freight forwarding and logistics industry, esteem deserving individuals, and use this award as a means to motivate others to contribute their talents and efforts to the enhancement of this challenging and fascinating industry
The awarding of this title of FIATA Fellow is significant as this is only the second time in FIATA's 89-year history that a "FIATA Fellow" has been named.
